CHILDREN’S HOME OF POUGHKEEPSIE RECEIVES GRANT FROM THE DAVE THOMAS FOUNDATION FOR ADOPTION

Exclusive funding for Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program

Poughkeepsie, NY — The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie has received a grant from the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a national non-profit public charity, that will bring children waiting in foster care one step closer to being adopted into safe, loving and permanent homes. The grant is dedicated to funding a child-focused adoption recruiter for Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK), a signature program of the Foundation.

“Each year, many children in foster care turn 18 and leave the child welfare system without permanent families,” said Walter Joseph, Executive Director of the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie. “Through the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption’s Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program, the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie can focus dedicated time to matching children waiting in foster care the longest with families planning to adopt.”

Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption President & CEO, Rita Soronen, notes, “Since the national launch of Wendy’s Wonderful Kids in 2004, the number of child-focused recruiters in North America has grown from 7 to more than 400.” Soronen added, “We are pleased to be working extensively in New York and across the nation. As of today, more than 18,800 children have been served by the program. Of those children, more than 12,000 have had families identified for them, and nearly 8,000 have been adopted or are waiting for a final court hearing as a direct result of this evidence-based model, while more than 5,300 are currently being served.”

In 2011, a rigorous five-year national evaluation by Washington, D.C.-based Child Trends revealed that a child referred to the WWK program is up to three times more likely to be adopted, especially older youth

groups and children with special needs. There are more than 150,000 children in North America’s foster care systems waiting to be adopted, including more than 117,000 children in the United States (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Children’s Bureau; July 2016).
